Holiday Pet Hazards: Foods, Plants, and Decorations to Avoid

Dec 1, 2025

The holidays glow beautifully. Behind the tinsel and lights, however, are hazards perfectly designed to worry veterinarians. Pets approach December with boundless optimism and assume everything is edible.

Here is how to keep the season peaceful for everyone.

Holiday Foods to Avoid

  • Chocolate-Darker chocolate is more dangerous.
  • Grapes and raisins-Even tiny amounts can cause kidney failure.
  • Xylitol-Found in sugar-free gum and desserts. Very serious for dogs.
  • Rich or fatty leftovers-Turkey skin, ham, and gravy can trigger pancreatitis.
  • Bones-Raw bones are hard to digest and cause obstructions in the GI tract. Cooked bones splinter easily and are unsafe.

If your pet eats something questionable, call us immediately.

Decorations to Watch

  • Tinsel and ribbon-Cats often view these as irresistible toys. They are a common cause of intestinal blockages.
  • Ornaments-Broken glass is not forgiving on paws or stomachs.
  • Electrical cords-Puppies and curious cats sometimes attempt to chew them.
  • Christmas trees-Tree water can be contaminated and pine needles can irritate the stomach.
  • Toxic Holiday Plants
  • Lilies
  • Holly
  • Mistletoe
  • Poinsettias

Your home can still be festive with safer alternatives.
